Physical Education (PE)

Subject Leader: Miss G Mutch

With a lifelong love for sports, I have been actively involved in various athletic pursuits from an early age, excelling in both women’s cricket at regional level for North Yorkshire and squash during my university years.

As an ambassador for an active and healthy lifestyle, I have made significant contributions to embedding this ethos within our school community. I have championed initiatives promoting active transportation methods such as walking, cycling and scootering to school. By fostering a culture of physical activity, I aim to inspire and empower Applegarth pupils to lead healthy lives.

Recognising the power of sports as a vehicle for inspiration, I am dedicated to exposing children to local and national sports figures, such as Guiness World Record holder and freestyle football, Ash Randell. By providing these real-life examples, I aim to ignite passion and motivation in young athletes, encouraging them to pursue their own sporting dreams.

I firmly believe that sports should be accessible and enjoyable for all children and I actively work towards creating an inclusive sports environment where every child can participate in physical activities. Within school, I ensure that a variety of after-school clubs are available to all children, offering them a diverse range of sporting opportunities. From cricket and football to karate and bushcraft.

Through collaborations with local schools, I organise competitions and events which allow our children to experience sports in context. These experiences provide valuable opportunities for growth, teamwork and sportsmanship. I have an  unwavering commitment to sports, inclusive practices, and the wellbeing of children; I am dedicated to fostering a love for physical fitness and helping children lead healthy and active lifestyles.

At Applegarth Primary School, we aim to provide high quality physical education, which inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. Children are given opportunities to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. We ensure that pupils can develop the fundamental movement skills to become increasingly competent and confident while accessing a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and co-ordination both individually and with others. For us, the teaching and learning of PE is placed in exciting contexts that will inspire and motivate our children to build character and reinforce values such as fairness and respect. Being part of the local Sports Partnership, we are able to enter a range of intra-school competitions so pupils can play competitive games and apply skills learnt in lessons. Children are afforded the opportunity to learn to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.  Additionally, we offer opportunities for participation in unique sports such as judo, cyclocross, triathlon, yoga and archery to ensure our children’s outlook to sport is broad.

School Games Mark

The School Games vision is to make a clear and meaningful difference to the lives of even more children and young people. This is achieved by putting physical activity and competitive sport at the heart of schools and providing more young people with the opportunity to compete and achieve their personal best. The School Games aims to provide every child with a positive experience in an environment where the young person’s motivation, competence and confidence are at the centre of the competition.

Applegarth is the proud owner of FIVE Gold School Games Marks and we were delighted to be awarded PLATINUM in February 2023.
