Design & Technology

Subject Leader: Mrs E Burrell

Growing up as a farmer’s daughter, I developed a natural curiosity about how things work. I was always eager to learn and would ask my dad countless questions to develop my knowledge and understanding about various concepts. Instead of merely providing answers, my dad encouraged hands-on learning experiences, allowing me to actively participate in tasks such as fixing fences and tying wool sheets with intricate stitching. Together, we even indulged in making and eating delicious homemade chocolate cakes.

As a teacher, I am committed to providing all children at Applegarth School with opportunities to develop lifelong skills through engaging design and technology units. I believe that hands-on experiences and active participation are key to fostering a love for learning and nurturing essential life skills.

Drawing from inspiration from the local area, I recognise the wealth of learning opportunities available. Weekly markets provide a platform for celebrating local produce and offer the chance to develop research skills by studying existing products. Family farms, which play a vital role in the agricultural sector, are also deserving of recognition and appreciation. Additionally, our local play park is a space where our pupils have actively planned, designed and contributed to its development.

Our Design Technology curriculum is split into three key sections each year. Each year group will create three different projects by the end of the year. The first half of each term is used to develop an understanding of the project and develop the necessary skills which are needed to successfully complete the project, whilst the second half of the term is designing and making the project.

*As we continue our curriculum journey, speak to our subject, Mrs Burrell for the most-up-to-date version of our design and technology long-term plan.

Implementation

Children learn about a wide range of materials, manufacturing processes and creative design-based activities with a focus on working increasingly independently to develop their own ideas effectively both individually and within groups. The various projects, which are completed throughout the children’s schooling career, build on the work completed in previous years, ensuring children are constantly developing their knowledge, skills and understanding as they review and evaluate their design proposals and project outcomes. Children develop their own portfolio of work in Design & Technology as they progress throughout Primary School and transition into Secondary School.
